New Group 1 milling wheat KWS Zyatt has performed well in Kent where it yielded an impressive 11.5t/ha.
Grown by Trevor Pierce, farm manager for R Sternberg Farms near Tenterden, the 16ha of KWS Zyatt not only made milling specification, but also out-yielded the farm’s Skyfall by about 1t/ha.
“It shows great promise and compares favourably with the other milling wheats grown on the farm. It has been a kind season, but nonetheless it looked good with no real weaknesses. We will grow more next year,” says Mr Pearce.
Drilled on 7th October into silty clay loam and harvested over two days in late July, the crop has impressed.
“It was easy to cut and early to harvest. Hagberg is good because we got it before the wet weather came in August and protein is respectable,” he says.
The crop received a standard fungicide programme and 230 kg N/ha of granular fertiliser during the spring with a foliar application of 15 kg N/ha at ear emergence.
