KWS Tower is Top 2-Row on New Barley Recommended List

December 2013

KWS Tower joins KWS Glacier as the top-yielding two-row barley on the 2014/15 UK Recommended List.

At 106% of controls, both varieties are 3% higher yielding that current on farm favourite KWS Cassia.

KWS Tower is exceptionally bold grained and provides yields to challenge those of hybrid variety, Volume.

At 108% of controls, it is on a par with the hybrid on light soils and is just 1% behind Volume on heavy soils.

KWS UK cereals manager, Keith Best says that KWS Tower – a Saffron x Retriever cross - has been very consistent over the four years it has been in trial.

“It was the top yielding conventional two-row for three year’s running from 2010-2012 and only just pipped by two RL varieties in 2013,” he confirms.

KWS Tower’s straw height and strength (rated 7) is similar to KWS Cassia and it has a good specific weight at 68.2 kg/hl, coupled with an exceptionally large grain size and the same earliness rating as KWS Cassia - 1 day ahead of Cassata.

KWS Tower also has good disease resistance ratings including a 6 for Rhynchosporium and a 7 for yellow rust.† Net blotch at 4 will need to be watched.

“With strong yields across the UK and on different soil types, KWS Tower will suit most growers,” suggests Mr Best.

With seed availability unlikely to be an issue, KWS expects the variety, which is also BaYMV (Strain 1) resistant, to take 15% market share next autumn.
