Picto Becomes Top OSR for Gross Output in East/West

December 2014

Picto becomes the highest gross output conventional oilseed rape on the HGCA Recommended List for the E/W region.

According to KWS oilseed rape product manager, Tom Dummett, it has consistently produced gross outputs 7% ahead of controls in all three year it has been in trials.† “This highlights its reliability, whatever the conditions,” he says.

Bred by KWS Momont, Picto has vigorous early growth and big, fleshy leaves producing an extremely stiff, lodging resistant canopy.† It has mid season flowering and early maturity, plus twin 5 ratings for stem canker and light leaf spot.

Frontier seed manager Peter James suggests that Picto has the potential to become a major variety.† “We have already seen significant uptake and these growers say that its ‘hybrid-like’ vigour has stood out this season.

“This though should be no surprise as Picto is an Ovation x ER115 cross – the latter having Expert in its pedigree.† †Both are well-liked, tried and tested parents, contributing to its very high seed yield – which at 107% of controls - is unbeatable for a conventional variety on the new RL,” he says.

Agronomically, Picto is rated 8 for standing power and it has an 8 for stem stiffness, a combination that is difficult to match and, at 152cm height, it is just 4cm taller than DK Cabernet.

Mr James points out that Picto’s earliness of flowering sets it apart from Cabernet - which is one of the latest in a commercially grown conventional oilseed rape variety.† “At the same time its earlier maturity will help provide an earlier harvest.”

“At 104 and 112% of controls in the two official trials where verticillium wilt has been an issue, the signs are that, like its parent Ovation, it could also offer some resistance to this disease,” he says.

Frontier – which has already released a significant tonnage onto farm – suggests that Picto being most popular in the central and southern half of the UK.
