Forage Maize - Breeding Goals
The KWS maize breeding programme is focused on producing stable, high yielding maize with excellent agronomic traits. Selection and trial sites are situated across northern Europe and throughout the UK in order to ensure the introduction of successful varieties well suited to the requirements of the UK market.
Key breeding goals are:
- Yield Stability
- Chilling / stress tolerance
- Disease resistance (kabatiella [Eyespot], Maize Rust, Smut, helminthsporium, fusarium)
- Standing power and lodging resistance
- Silage maturity and cob ripeness
- Dry matter content
- Plant health and digestibility
- Stay green character
- Desired harvest maturity
