Beet Cyst Nematode

(Heterodera schachtii)

Introduction

Beet Cyst Nematode (BCN) has been recognised throughout Europe for approximately 140 years.  The pest has been present in the UK since the 1920s. Growers supplying the Wissington factory region were only allowed to grow beet in long rotations as a means of minimising build-up of the pest.

Today, with closer rotations, the effects of BCN will be more commonly noted. With the introduction of the first BCN tolerant variety, Fiorenza KWS, growers have a variety that can produce commercially competitive yields in infested conditions for the first time.
