Northern Rape Gets Recommended

5th December 2008

High yielding hybrid rape, Cuillin has been Recommended by HGCA for northern growers.  According to plant breeder KWS UK, the variety offers high hybrid yields, with low lodging risk and the best possible light leaf spot resistance.

“With the highest treated and untreated gross output of any rape in the North last year – equating to a yield of 5.4t/ha – Cuillin has all the characteristics needed for the testing conditions found in this Region, says the company’s OSR manager, Julie Goult.

“As a restored hybrid which is early to flower and with medium maturity, Cuillin can also better utilise the longer daylight hours and extended growing season of northern Britain, to pile on the yield.

“Combine this with an exceptional light leaf spot rating of 9, and the best RL lodging and stem stiffness combination for the Northern Region, and it is more agronomically secure on farm than current varieties,” she says.

Cuillin – which was fast-tracked last year – is already being grown in Scotland and the north of England.  KWS UK expects it to take a significant market share on the back of this Regional Recommendation next autumn.
