Breeder’s statement:

Wintmalt is an exciting new variety with promising malting quality. It has high yield, particularly in the eastern region and good disease resistance, particularly to Net Blotch. With good winter hardiness, short and stiff straw it should help overcome some weaknesses with current varietiesbyoffering greater security of retention ofmalting quality in the field prior to harvest.

Promising malting quality in the UK and Overseas

The IBD has  undertaken early testing of Wintmalt and confirmed that it has similar quality to the other malting varieties already on the list. In addition, it has been listed in Germany as a malting quality variety and is already in EBC trials in the Northern and Central regions. Furthermore, testing of this variety by Soufflet, Malt Europ, Cargill, DMG, Global Malt VLB and Viking Malt across Europe is confirming the suitability of Wintmalt for malting in a number of countries.
