Four KWS UK Group 2’s Make RL Plantings

Four KWS UK winter wheats have gone forward to CEL Recommended List trials to be planted this autumn.

According to technical director, Chris Tapsell, no other company has more wheat varieties in the RL pipeline; all four are potential Group 2 milling wheats.

“This illustrates that our breeding programme has come of age,” he says. “It also justifies our change of emphasis two years ago of focusing on, and fast-tracking, potential milling varieties.”

The Thriplow-based breeder is already a market leader in the Group 3 sector with Viscount and Robigus. It also has two of the UK’s highest yielding feed wheats – Oakley and Humber - in its portfolio, with Grafton and Conqueror up for Recommendation this winter.

Now, it hopes that Cordiale, in the Group 2 sector will be joined by new varieties in the coming season. Of the four potential newcomers, CPBT W152 is leading the pack and under-going commercial evaluation.

Further back in the variety testing pipeline, KWS UK also has the highest yielding variety (CPBT W165) and biscuit potential wheat (W158) in NL1 trials.
