The Future’s Bright for Leading UK Plant Breeder

20th May 2008

Same place, same people, but under a new name and new logo, and with some interesting new oilseed rape, sugar beet and cereal varieties.  That’s what visitors expecting to find CPB Twyford at Cereals 2008 will find.

Now under a new KWS UK banner, the UK’s innovative breeding team will be bringing new varieties – including Viscount, Wintmalt, Carissima and Epure - to the fore in their plots at the June 11-12th event at Leadenham, Lincs.

According to KWS UK commercial director, Andrew Newby, with growers looking for alternatives to Claire and maybe even Robigus in the Group 3 sector, Viscount could be the answer.

“It’s currently the highest yielding Group 3 variety in National List trials and only beaten by one other feed wheat candidate,” he says.  Not surprisingly it has been fast-tracked for release this autumn.

Viscount is joined by Wintmalt, which as the name suggests is the company’s new winter malting barley.  “It’s awaiting IBD approval, but early feedback has been positive,” says Andrew Newby.

In the oilseeds sector, growers can judge for themselves whether Epure – a variety which has also been brought to the market a year early – matches up to its table-topping national list yield performance for gross output from an in-bred variety.

For sugar beet growers, KWS UK has a bumper crop of new introductions.  They include both the highest yielding rhizomania resistant type, Carissima, and also the top-performing traditional variety, Mandella on the new 2009 NIAB/BBRO Recommended List.

In addition to these, KWS UK will be presenting a further 15 oilseed rape, sugar beet and cereal varieties including some interesting new material further back in the UK variety testing pipeline.

Finally, for those looking to taste what they grow, master baker, John Haynes is again on hand to produce doughnuts and Chelsea buns from Cordiale and Malacca and provide freshly baked biscuits and muffins from Viscount and Robigus.
