United Kingdom Products Maize Grain Maize / CCM

Grain Maize and Corn Cob Mix

Corn cob mix (CCM) is harvested as a high value feed, ideal for providing very high levels of starch and fibre content. The crop is cut at a similar stage to grain maize, using a cob picker header, attached to a conventional forage harvester, with a corn cracker fitted. A similar product, ground ear maize (GEM) can also be produced, when harvested via a combine.

CCM comprises the mature grain, inner cob (rachis) and surrounding husk. The remaining maize stover is chopped by the picker header, and ploughed back in.

Key benefits

  • Provides very high starch, by pass starch and fibre levels
  • Ideal feed for providing higher levels of rumen fibre and ‘scratch factor’ in the diet
  • CCM can be ensiled, preserved and fed in conjunction with maize silage
  • Harvested with a conventional forage harvester and maize picker header

Once harvested, CCM is ensiled with an appropriate additive, and contains higher fibre contents than silage maize. Non Digestible fibre (NDF) can be between 10 – 15% and is ideal for providing higher rumen ‘scratch factor’ particularly when combined with very high maize feeding regimes.

Varieties with early cob ripeness and good standing power suit both early silage, and CCM production.  This gives added flexibility for dual purpose harvesting of silage and CCM from one variety.

Suitable early varieties are LAPRIORA (KXA5011) and KAUKAS where an early harvest is desired, or on less favourable areas.
