Grain Maize and Corn Cob Mix(CCM)
Whilst the majority of grain maize grown in the UK is crimped, there is increased interest in harvesting the crop for dried grain, suitable for both feed and human consumption markets.
Advantages for grain maize:
• Harvested with a conventional combine and maize picker header
• High yield potential (10-12 t/ha) of fresh grain
• Low risk of effluent (65-70 DM%)
Recommended varieties:
Very Early (Suitable for dried or crimped grain): LAPRIORA, CORYPHEE
Medium Early (Suitable for crimped grain): SALGADO, KONSENSUS
In areas where harvesting crimped maize is problematic, harvesting for corn cob mix (CCM) is a viable alternative. Maize taken for CCM requires fewer heat units to reach maturity, thus putting it in reach of growers in more marginal growing areas.
Advantages of CCM:
• Spreads harvesting
• Ideal for boosting ‘scratch factor’ in the diet
• Single pass operation producing a ‘ready to ensile’ feed
Recommended varieties:
Ultra Early (Suitable for very marginal areas): KENTAURUS
Very Early (Suitable for intermediate and mainstream sites): LAPRIORA, CORYPHEE
