Cordiale – The UK’s No.1 Breadwinner
Last summer saw Cordiale firmly established as the UK’s most consistent breadmaking wheat on farm in what was another difficult harvest.
And, in the north, where harvest delays were even more common, the early maturing variety again came up trumps.
Premium Group 2 Favourite
More and more farmers every year are switching into Cordiale – supported by consistent delivery of quality of premiums.
Backed initially by ADM and now widely used by other millers, Cordiale is well established as one of the UK’s leading milling varieties.
Often attracting ‘best in class’ premiums, it has produced a consistent, proven, high quality sample compared to other breadmakers.

While other new varieties have yet to be tested in any significant quantities, Cordiale is commercially proven and highly sought after by the miller.
The Only Consistent Breadwinner for Business…
Intake data from one of the UK’s leading grain businesses, Openfield, clearly demonstrates the advantages of Cordiale.
Across one million tonnes of major milling varieties traded by the company after last harvest, Cordiale stood head
and shoulders above all other breadmakers.
Over half of all Cordiale samples tested made the required milling specification compared to an average acceptance
across all Group 2 varieties of just 12%.
And, despite its higher yields than established Group 1 breadmakers Hereward and Solstice, protein contents in Cordiale averaged 12.5% - levels that are more than acceptable to the miller.
The Only Consistent Breadwinner for Milling…
As the UK’s largest independent miller, ADM has benefitted from Cordiale’s reliable performance across a range of growing conditions and harvest years. This ensures its suitability in a wide range of their milling grists.
As a result, the variety is fully approved by ADM which views it as the top quality Group 2 wheat for use across a wide range of their flour grades.
ADM has successfully increased their volume of Cordiale through merchant buy back contracts, thus securing a consistent supply of the variety. These buy back contracts also demonstrate their support for growers who are increasing their focus on producing wheat for specific end processor markets.
“Cordiale’s early maturity and early harvestability, combined with its ability to hang on to its Hagberg, has been crucial to maintaining a good supply of quality wheat in each of the last three years.” says ADM Milling’s trading manager, Mark Ringrose.

Cordiale responds to a comprehensive fungicide programme. Early development in the spring means that spray dates may need to be earlier than for some other varieties.
This, backed by a double-8 ranking for standing power with and without PGRs, helps retain harvest quality when combining is delayed.
Nitrogen response trials show that Cordiale is one of the most efficient varieties at converting nitrogen into protein ensuring a large proportion of samples achieve full milling specifications; Openfield on-farm data support this.
Cordiale is resistant to soil borne wheat mosaic virus.
Cordiale is susceptible to chlorotoluron.
