The first choice for Scotland and the North
Cuillin is a hybrid variety bred by LS Plant Breeding.
Cuillin is a very high yielding hybrid with almost complete resistance to light leaf spot (LLS).
As a result, and as the name implies, Cuillin will suit northern growers who are finding it almost impossible to control a disease that can decimate yields.
In addition, with LLS now an increasing problem further south, Cuillin should also feature strongly in the plans of those in Middle Britain.
Light Leaf Spot
LLS is widespread in northern Britain. Crops routinely receive at least two sprays to control a disease that can cut yields by over 1.5t/ha.
The disease is also compromising yield further south.HGCA work, conducted by Rothamsted Research, confirms that LLS is now prevalent as far south as The Wash.
These forecasts suggest that most crops north of a line drawn from the Severn estuary and The Wash will now see levels of the disease where 25% or more plants are affected.
With current fungicides struggling to provide a reasonable level of control, growers need to look at the in-built LLS resistance rating of a variety to minimise the impact of the disease.
In this respect, Cuillin has a near perfect 9 rating; it is virtually immune to the disease and in many situations doesn’t warrant a full fungicide programme.
In trials by Frontier last year, a single half rate of Proline applied in late autumn provided the best yield response, illustrating the very strong LLS rating provided by the variety.
And, even when the same half rate fungicide was applied at three separate timings – twice in the autumn and again in the spring - there was no additional yield advantage.

“There is no doubt that even in Recommended List trials we cannot now control light leaf spot in Scotland, even with a full fungicide programme,” Jim McVittie – HGCA.
Exceptional yield
In treated trials, Cuillin has a gross output of 108%. However, in untreated trials at 104%, it is exceptional – 3% ahead of all other varieties and 8% ahead of Emerson.
Indeed, untreated in the North, Cuillin has produced average Recommended List trial yields that are just 0.2t/ha behind its
treated mean of 5.4t/ha. This highlights its exceptional LLS resistance rating.
Combine this with one of the highest oil contents on the Recommended List for the Northern region and Cuillin will provide very high gross outputs from a variety where significant fungicide savings can be made.

“Cuillin is outstanding, coming top in our trials. It is highly unresponsive to fungicides in terms of light leaf spot and this gives it a real edge on farm with less passes and a lower carbon footprint.” Andrew Gilchrist – Scottish Agronomy
Agronomically suited to the North
Cuillin is quick to move in the spring and stands well even in the most testing of conditions.

With early flowering and a medium maturity, Cuillin has a long and productive flowering and pod-fill period, without compromising harvest date.
